9 August – A glad song

I was just so glad
when the first gladioli
grew their stems
full straight and high
and broadcast their blooms
in beautiful hues
making perfect
the present-bulbs I gave to you.

And it makes me so glad
that this wonder is real,
you bury a knobbly gift
and trust its promise fulfils.
Weeks and months pass,
then when you’ve half forgotten
colour unfolds fountains
and shines surprise gems.
