2 December – Pale

There’s something about Winter that’s pale
like it’s caught its own chill and shows it
in washed out skies of bleached-bleary skin
peeking out between thick duvet clouds.
Its hues are quiet and withdrawn
– muted, muffled, scarce –
as if it’s shy, or somehow reluctant
to be defined by anything except
absence.
But even in its half-hearted light,
it still has hidden beauty to bestow
if you’re willing to go on a quest
to seek and see it up close.
So be the one to make the move,
pursue friendship with its wary ways,
and you’ll find underneath all that white, weary bluster,
Winter will often respond by blushing to sudden colour.
